CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

DANIEL

October. Now...

Silence rang in his ears with a high-pitched squeal of her absence, of the ten minutes he had to wait before his world was destroyed.

He'd hear the call come from downstairs, of Wade calling back Rob with the finality of it. Daniel couldn't bear to have any other vision in that moment. When the news wrecked him, he wanted to be staring at her face, thankful for the short time they had shared.

He went upstairs and sat on their bed, his eyes on their framed wedding photos sitting on the nightstand, his mind to that day—their wedding.

"You know," she had said smiling in his arms as they swayed on the dance floor under the twinkling lights of the wedding tent in their backyard. "Seven years from now, everything you love about me is going to annoy the hell out of you."

"Seven years from now?" He spun her around. "What about seven minutes ago, Mrs. Pierce?"

"Seven minutes ago? What did I do? We've only been married an hour."

And it had been the best of his life so far. "You wouldn't let me smash the wedding cake in your face. You know, like they do in all those funniest videos."

"You should know this about your wife of sixty minutes." Her fingertip tickled over his lips, he loved hearing that—"your wife"—from hers. "If I want cake smashed in my mouth, I'll ram my face into one. I didn't marry a practical joker. I married a grown-ass, sexy, strong man who'd rather make love to me than make me the butt of a joke."

"Then you should know this about your husband." Those new words along with her dazzling eyes gazing back up at him? He smiled from depths he'd never known. "He secretly loves that you're always right, especially about that sexy, strong part."

"So, you admit it?"

"That I'm sexy and strong?" Winding her up would be his pastime for life. "Fuck yes."

"What about me being right? Always?"

"Yes. You're right that I always want to make love to you. Or fuck you. Depending upon the mood."

Her hands rested on his chest, laughing chatter filled the air around them, but his gaze wouldn't leave hers. "What else am I always right about?" She wouldn't let him off the hook. He was thankful for it.

"I'll confess this—you're always right for me." His nose nuzzled against hers. "Consider it my wedding and birthday gift to you, all wrapped up on the same day."

It wasn't. Her birthday surprise—a first edition Virginia Wolfe—it was waiting, wrapped for her on their bed.

Her dancing had stopped. Tears rose in the ocean of her eyes. "You are, Daniel.” One fell down her cheek. “You are the greatest gift to me. I thought I’d be alone forever. I never thought I'd be loved again."

His palms cradled her jaw, the dance floor and everyone disappearing, all except for his world in his hands.

"You are so very loved, Charlotte Ravenel. And I swear to you—I'm right about this—I will love you well beyond seven years; I will love every bloody annoying thing you do.
